Research into employment has found that formal education supplies us with only enough knowledge to get us onto the employment ladder. The biggest influence on subsequent success is our Emotional Intelligence (EQ). Harvard University's research on science students, conducted over decades, has shown that EQ is about four times more influential than IQ on career succcess and personal influence. Leadership studies carried out among large organisations showed that close to 90% of their leaders' success could be directly attributed to high EQ competencies.
Because EQ is still not on the school curriculum, smart companies are now 'growing their own'. A 1997 survey of basic practices among major corporations found that four out of five companies were already promoting EQ development in their employees through training and education, and taking account of it during evaluation and hiring.

When it rains in Attravadi village, south-east India, there are 54 children who are too scared to go outside to play in the puddles...
